Passport Background Requirements : light-coloured background required (not white)
- Full colour
- Photo must be less than 6 months old
- Head centred with a clear gap around the sides and top of head, including hair
- Maximum size of head, including hair, must be 75% of the photo
- True image must not be altered in any way
- In focus, with no red-eye and no reflected light on the face
- The background must be plain and light coloured
- Strong contrast between image and background
- No shadows
- Head straight to the camera
- Eyes open
- Mouth closed
- Neutral expression, not smiling or frowning
- No hair across your face or eyes as eyes must be clearly visible
- No head bands, or head coverings
- Eyes must be clearly showing through glasses, with no reflection
- No glasses with heavy-rimmed frames
- No sunglasses, or glasses with tinted lenses that obscure your eyes
- In the case of babies eyes must be open
- Photo must be less than 6 months old
Online Passport Photo
- a portrait photo with a 4:3 aspect ratio
- in jpg or jpeg format
- between 250KB and 10MB
- between 900 and 4500 pixels wide and 1200 and 6000 pixels high
- Scanned photos are not acceptable for our Online Passport Service.
Paper Photos
- 2 identical photos, printed on photo quality paper and 35mm x 45mm in dimension
Unacceptable Photographic Paper Requirements
- Extremely high gloss papers should not be used.
- Inkjet Printers should NOT be used.
- Heavily backed thermal papers that crack easily in transport should not be used.

Online applications All online application visa photos must meet the following file size requirements:
- The photo file size needs to be between 500KB and 3MB
- The photo must have dimensions between 900 x 1200 pixels and 2250 x 3000 pixels (in a 3:4 aspect ratio)
- Be in portrait (not landscape)
- Have even lighting with minimal shadowing
- Be in colour, showing natural skin tones
- Be in focus (not blurry)
- Not contain red-eye
- Be an original photo (not changed by photo-editing software)
- Not be a selfie Be taken 1.5 metres from the face
- Be taken against a plain, light-coloured (but not white) background with no patterns or objects
- Only contain plain clothing patterns
- Be of one person
- Facing the camera and head straight
- Eyes open and mouth closed
- Do not smile or frown
- Show the face clearly and that long hair is tucked behind ears
- Positioned in the middle of the photo
- Remove sunglasses and hats If wearing prescription glasses make sure the eyes show clearly through the lenses, with no reflected light (It may be easier to remove them)
- You may wear a head covering for religious or medical reasons. Make sure that the face and hairline can be seen in the photo.
